10:27 pm: Read The Moon is a Harsh Mistress yesterday and this evening - my first Heinlein. Interesting book, and considering what I'd heard and was worried about, I was pleasantly how mild the POV-pushing was. One thing I noted was that it covers a lot of story and time well, without seeming to rush much. After I'd finished I'd felt I had read a much longer story (in a good way).

It does probably works better for people on the other side of the pond, though. And for people who share his politics.

Of the Heinleins I've read (eight or so), only Glory Road and Job: A Comedy Of Justice were more enjoyable. I find Heinlein's societal models are interesting even when they're barking.

Ditto - started with the juveniles while in primary school (I think the first I read was Between Planets, which isn't exactly an auspicious beginning), and had devoured the Heinlein content of my local library (almost a complete set of the Gollancz hardcovers) by the time I'd turned twelve or thirteen.

That's a pretty impressive record - you're a geek *and* you know Chris Gutteridge *and* you've managed to get away without him pressing copies of Heinlein novels on you...

I think he's running low now. His bookshelf only seems to hold one or two of each.

Heh. He's certainly taken the whole book crossing deal to heart, though I question whether putting copies of I will fear no evil in Goblets is a good way to introduce people to Heinlein (I *think* it was IWFNE - certainly not one of the better books).
