i totally called the "colony is probably only a few days old" thing about 15 minutes in. go me!

the TARDIS translates, we are told. if we assume that martha understands the Hath - except that they are not being translated for the viewer - does the episode still make sense?

Well, Martha seemed to be able to understand. I figure it's kind of like the Universal Translator on Star Trek. It takes some time to figure out the linguistics involved when they meet a brand new species.

Continuity interferes with artistic expression.
Or.
You'll give yourself a headache trying to rationalise inconsistencies into what is perceived to be the realities of an artificial universe where there really are effectively gods who rewrite the laws of physics whether Scotty likes it or no.

Funny, it never occurred to me to get that analytical about that episode. It just seemed like a big bunch of shit. Maybe if they'd got Theakston to direct it and used guns that looked more menacing than repeatedly lighting farts...

Doctor Who plot devices attempt to be all-inclusive through ludicrous explanations and/or complete lack of detail. Just think of the TARDIS as having an infinite improbability drive (which it might as well have, really, though the IID is definitely a superior all-inclusive plot device) and all is well. :)
